About paget's disease (Source: NHSDirect)
Paget's disease of bone is a chronic (long-term) condition that affects bone growth, causing bones to expand and become deformed . The deformed bones then become weaker and are more likely to fracture (break). The areas of the body affected most often are the spine , the pelvis, the legs, the skull (head) and the collarbone. Paget's disease of bone is more common in the UK than in anywhere else in the world. It tends to affect people over the age of 40 and there are more cases in men than in women. Paget's disease of bone is not the same as Paget's disease of the breast and genitals, which is a type of skin cancer. ...

Causes of paget's disease (Source: NHSDirect)
Like other cells in our bodies, bone cells are constantly dying and being replaced by new ones. With Paget's disease of bone, this process is disrupted. Bone is broken down at a faster rate than normal. In response to the speedy loss of bone cells, the body makes new bone cells very quickly. These are then badly 'woven' back into the bone, and as a result, bones are weaker. They are also bigger, because the body has produced more new bone cells than it needs. The actual cause of Paget's disease of bone is not known. Evidence shows that it might be heredity (run in the family); up to 4 in 10 people with Paget's disease of bone have a close relative who also develops the disease. A gene (something which is passed down from your parents to determine your body's characteristics) has been identified that can make it more likely for you to get the disease. It could also be because the bone is infected with a virus that affects it in some way, but this is a controversial theory, which has been hard to prove. ...

Symptoms of paget's disease (Source: NHSDirect)
Around 60-80% of people with Paget's disease of bone have no symptoms at all. This is because the abnormal or deformed bones are localised to one particular part of the body. When symptoms do occur, they can include: deep aching in the bones that is not eased by rest or exercise, shooting pains in the affected area, abnormalities such as bowing (curving) of the leg or spine , or skull enlargement, and muscle weakness, due to enlarged bones applying pressure to nerves. Symptoms can also include deafness, dizziness, tinnitus (ringing or noise in the ear) and disturbances in vision. This is caused by increased pressure on the nerves in the head if the condition causes your skull to enlarge. If a bone is affected near a joint (the point of connection between two bones), the condition can also cause arthritis ( inflammation of the joint ). There may also be bone fractures because of the disease, which may occur for no apparent reason or from very minor injuries. ...

paget's disease - Conventional Treatments (Source: NHSDirect)
Treatment is not needed unless you have symptoms that cause discomfort or there is a risk that symptoms might cause problems in the future. For example, deafness or an enlarged skull. Bisphosphonate medicines are a common treatment that can be used to slow the effects of the condition. They work by reducing the amount of new bone cells that are produced. This helps the bones to grow in the normal way. It also reduces pain and can prevent complications by slowing the disease and the abnormal growth of the bones. Bisphosphonates only need to be taken for several weeks or months as the effects can last a long time. They are taken as tablets (on an empty stomach) or by injection. Anti-inflammatory medicines such as aspirin and ibuprofen as well as painkillers can be used to reduce bone pain .  In some cases, surgery is needed if the disease has caused a deformity or damaged a joint . Joint replacement surgery is most commonly used. Treatment for Paget's disease of bone should also include advice on how to reduce the risk of serious falls or accidents that may result in broken bones. ...
