Bariatrics is the field of medicine that specializes in treating obesity. Bariatric surgery is a surgical subspecialty that performs operations to treat morbid obesity. Because obesity is so difficult to treat in the long term, doctors and scientists are looking for ways to help persons who have this chronic disease.
